This is a detailed tutorial geared towards people with a basic working knowledge of GIMP's features. Although we will be using the GAP plugin (separate download from GIMP), the only thing GAP will be used for is converting the video footage. I've provided a QuickTime movie (mov) and an avi of me on the lawnmower (Yeah, I know it's lame, but it's free and I'm making it available for you to use! Can't get any better than that!) :D The sig we are making is only for example purposes!! Use this as a springboard for your own creations. The remaining steps will be done in GIMP alone.

The reason I'm interested in this type of stuff is my digital camera provides output in QuickTime (mov) format. I want to be able to use that footage in GIMP. Well, now I can. I've elected to do the tutorial based on sig creation because a lot of people are interested in it and it's a lot easier for me to package for download on the web. But, I encourage you to not limit yourself to signatures and avatars only. Learn to make your own movies with GIMP and GAP!

The tutorial is in html format. Download the zip file to your desktop or other convenient location and extract the html file and the two folders to the same location. Double-click on the html file to view.

As always, I look forward to your questions and comments.

Enjoy!

I will attest to the length of time you have been working on this since you and I have been in conversation over this one for sometime.

Let's see what you can do with Gimp at ~GIMPtacular
Oh, I do love your tutorials. I must try this out. I've got a question though, what about my Ogg Vorbis movies? .OGG?

Oh, and I started reading it, would you please put in instead of:

"and Linux users ([link])."

"also, Debian/Ubuntu users can run the following command:

sudo apt-get install gimp-gap".

Believe me, that's a lot easier then compiling from source. =)

I don't believe the OGG files will be converted, but I suggest you try it and see. GAP will certainly let you know one way or the other! :D I've added the line about the Debian/Ubuntu users, but before I repost, I need you to clarify something for me....the link you've given me for Linux users is the same one I posted. Did you accidently get the wrong link?

Thanks! I don't figure it will be a problem, at least I hope not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it does happen!

No it was a quote to show you right about where you should put in the line.

(on another note, I'm running into trouble with this tutorial, I'll note you with screenshots and stuff)

Hey!! Great stuff! All that hard work has finally paid off eh? I did see DBJ's tut, and i know that you would never rip off anothers' idea. That thought would never even enter my head and i know everyone who watches you and knows you from GT would never think that either.Anyway, after i follwed the tut, i tried to add my new image to a sig, and failed dismally, so this tut will set me right! I know how hard you work for our benefit and its greatly appreciated.

On the subject of converting Video files, if you ever have a format that GAP wont recognise, but you want to use, then there is a freeware Video Encoder that converts all video files to any video format.. so if you have a WMV or XvID format, then you can convert it to .MOV or .AVI quickly and easily.  its called SUPER©

I primarily use it as it converts all these formats to .VOB files that can be burned to DVD, and played on your standard DVD player

Thanks for this Fence. We really do appreciate it.. (Me especially)!!! :ahoy:

Ok, cool. I've added that line and will post the updated version this evening.

Send me the screenshots and I'll certainly help you out. Hopefully, I haven't missed something really important and created a problem.

Thanks for the comments! Very much appreciated! Well, I am always trying to be careful about stepping on other people's toes and since the timing is so cooincidental, I'm sure there could be some suggestions to the fact that I was copying. I don't think it will, but have covered the bases, if necessary.

I hope you can successfully create the signature without any problems. I have had another user tell me in the comments here that they are having difficulty with the tutorial in some area and will be sending me some screenshots. So, hopefully, this is a limited problem and I haven't posted something that's riddled with errors.

That SUPER(C) is an excellent resource you've given to me. It's amazing that never turned up in my Google search (maybe I stepped right over it?) I will definitely try that out as I've been using RadVideoTools (an excellent program, but I'm always looking for others). RAD will only convert to avi, so maybe this one will be that much better.

If you have any problems with the tutorial, please let me know asap. This way I can clarify everything as soon as possible so others don't run into the same mistakes.

Thanks again.
