Animated Snowfall in GIMP GAP by fence-post Animated Snowfall in GIMP GAP by fence-post
December 21, 2009: I've created a script that will create the animation in just a couple of clicks! You can view/download it here: fence-post.deviantart.com/art/…

Here's a nifty little tutorial for creating animated snowfall using GIMP GAP (GIMP Animation Package), which is a separate download from GIMP. The tutorial is written for people with an intermediate level of GAP usage, but I include a lot of screenshots and narrative to help out those who are still a bit new to the process. I certainly don't mind helping out you newbies, but please keep in mind that this is really intended for intermediate GIMP users.

The stock for the tutorial was obtained here: www.deviantart.com/deviation/3… I received approval from the stock image creator to host this tutorial with his stock outside of GIMP (I've used a significantly scaled down version in the tutorial). However, downloading this tutorial does not give you rights to use the stock image for other purposes. You are only to use this stock for learning purposes. It's your responsibility to obtain approval from the creator before using elsewhere.

This tutorial is in html format. Download the zip file to a convenient location and extract all the files/folders to a convenient folder on your hard drive (ie..desktop) and then double-click the html file and you should be able to view it in your favorite browser from the comfort of your own home.

Let me know if you see any problems that need correcting. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing your outcome.

Until then, Happy GIMP-ing!

WOW! Do you know where can I download Gap? I have tryed on the oficial site of GIMP but it hasn't worked (probably I had done some mistake). I only use Gimp for doing my animation ;)

It's such a great idea but when I did it, there was so much snow I could barely see the picture behind it. Anyway to fix that? I would also appreciate a tutorial to do it just using Gimp if you don't mind. :)

Hey, blaze!

The video menu will only appear after you've installed GAP. If you've installed GAP and it's still not appearing, you might need to restart GIMP for it to show up.

Thanks for this tutorial! I combined it with your glass globe container tutorial and came up with this.

It took me forever to get it right, and I'm sure there was an easier way, but it's done.

Thanks Again!

Very creative effort! Thanks so much for trying both the tutorials and sharing your results! Did you use masks to cut out the snow outside of the globe? If so, did you use GAP to add the masks or did you do them manually?

Unfortunately, I am not very good with masks yet. I tried making a mask of the globe, but became confused, so I did it the tedious way. I made a selection of the globe, inverted it, and cleared the outside on all 40 frames. Took a little bit of time to get everything right, but I am pretty pleased with the result. I may give it another shot with slightly less snow, and possibly give masks another try!

Yeah masks can be confusing, but once you get the hang of it, they're very powerful. Since you've done the kaleidoscope tutorial, you'll recall the heavy use of masks there. To use them for the globe in conjunction with GAP, you would just create a new layer with a circular section where the globe is and fill it with white. Then fill everything outside of the circle with black. Then going into the Move Path tool in GAP you would add that black/white layer above your snow layer. Then go to frames modify menu and tell GAP to use that layer as a mask for the snow layer. Then you would simply delete the layer you just added because GAP has created a mask out it and the now the black and white layer is just in the way.

I can explain it further, with screenshots, if you're interested, once the Dome gets up and running again. Hopefully it will be soon...droz emailed me a little bit ago and said he's nearly finished with the clean up.

By golly there is snow in my picture and it moves. It isn't as polished as yours yet but I think I know why so I am going to do it again and see if what I do fixes it. If not I will ask you. But I prefer to figure things out myself.

But I am jumping up and down cause I made the snow move. Thank you for the cool Tutorial. I knew if I kept at it I would eventually get it to work.

Grasshopper bows to the master and then gives him a big hug...opps not suppose to do that.

Thank you

I don't know if it will work yet but I must remember to read the red writing on the picture in Move Path you added so we could make the snow move..So obviously my snow didn't move. Very important information there. Hee,hee. I hope it works this time. All I can say is Duh! Well, after I try again I will let you know what happened. Third times a charm.. :clap

It appears you covered everyting. I am going to give this a try. I feel like I can I have all the tools to do it and I have been using Gimp for years. So I should be able to do it with the straight forward instructions you gave.

So you want to see it Well since you did it first I am going to put it in scraps but you can see it there when I am done. I hope it is as easy as you make it seem. I will find out.

It will be my first animation if it works out and then I can conquer the world. Hmmm,Hmmmm ,sorry I get a little carried away.

Just a quick question before you get started....have you downloaded the most recent version? I just updated it a couple of minutes ago due to my dufus-ness (it's my word for the hour!) Make sure the version you have works properly (there were a couple of broken links and I adjusted the speed at the suggestion of my buddy, Sean-Michael - he thinks hailstorms are bad! :D )

Well, good luck with it. I've tried to make it as painless as possible and provide enough detail about the why's and how's. Let me know if you have any questions.

BTW, don't conquer the world too soon. That's probably a lot of stress on yourself!

Cheers!

Looks very smooth Art*

Only thing is my first interpretation was that it looked a lil like a hail storm, I would slow down the snow just a little but this is awesome work and much better then my first try at it!

Thanks Sean_Michael. I fixed the preview and the the information in the tutorial so it would be slowed down. I also had to resubmit the whole file because of another broken image link. I'm a dufus!
