This tutorial is dedicated to the Ripped Art Task Force ([link]) and all those who have had their artwork stolen.
You can find my steps for creating hidden watermarks using GIMP and a way to "unlock the hidden image" to show proof the work is yours.
Can you tell which of the two images above were watermarked? Neither can art thieves! Check out the tutorial here: [link]
This is by no means a perfect method...nothing is. But, if it helps one person who's gone through the agony of having their work ripped (especially those who make a living off their artwork), then this tutorial is worth it.
I'm very serious about this next statement:
The steps provided herein will also work in Photoshop or other photo imaging software that have similar blend modes; however, the steps discussed herein are mine. I would respectfully ask that if you convert these steps to another software that you give me credit for them, as well as send me a note that you have done so, including the URL where the steps are posted. It would be very embarrassing for you to be identified as ripping a tutorial specifically designed to stop ripping!
You may use this technique to protect your commercial works; however, describing or redistributing this technique as your own and in a way that brings you financial gain is NOT authorized.

That is certainly a step in the right direction for stopping art theives!
