This tutorial was created quite awhile ago and hosted on GIMPtalk.com. Since the writing of the original tutorial, GIMP has been updated a little bit in the way it handles text layers. Therefore, I too have updated this tutorial to include the changes in GIMP.

Here I'll show you how to create text out of an image using 3 different techniques. You'll probably find one way that works best for you and use it from here on out. I thought I would show the different techniques just so you would learn a few new tricks if you didn't already know them.

The tutorial is in htm format. Just click the Download to Desktop button, double-click the zip file, extract the file folder and htm file to a convenient location, and open the htm file at your leisure.
