Satin Texture in GIMP by fence-post Satin Texture in GIMP by fence-post
I came across this tutorial at pixeladdiction.com (www.pixeladdiction.com/bb/arti… and loved it so much, I got permission from them to convert it to GIMP. (EDIT: 3/10/08: You may also be interested in the script version, which will create the satin with the click of a button: fence-post.deviantart.com/art/…

It's a very straightforward tutorial with excellent results. Maybe try combining it with my Denim tutorial (www.deviantart.com/deviation/5… and/or my displacement tutorial (www.deviantart.com/deviation/3… - I used that to achieve the text in the preview above and on the blue satin texture with the Tampa Bay Lightning logo (image is packaged with the tutorial).

The tutorial is in html format. So, just download the zip file to a convenient location, like your desktop. Double-click the zip file and move the html file and the "files" folder to your desktop (the files folder and html file must be in the same location for the images to show up.) Double-click the html file and the tutorial will open.

Although nothing is required for you to download and use this tutorial, giving me a fave would be a simple way to show your thanks. Just click the :+fav: Add to Favorites link on the left side of the page, near the top. You don't even have to give me comments. How 'bout showing some love for someone who takes the time and effort to do the hard work of preparing these tutorials for your enjoyment and learning.

Enjoy!

I like how easy this was. The hardest part is getting the "folds" when I do the gradient step. And on one try, I discovered I could make sheer fabric. How cool is that!!

In the zip file is a folder containing the images. Are you placing that folder on your desktop too? You have to do that. I just tested it out and it works fine.

The tutorial is very nice and useful, but it doesn't work for me in GIMP. :( It is in the very first step - gradient tool, when I drag the mouse a few times, instead of making a pattern the picture becomes more and more black. The settings are exactly according to your tutorial. Could it be because you have a different version of GIMP? I have 2.2.8.

Sorry for the delay in responding....I haven't been on regularly lately. Glad you like the tutorial, but sorry you're running into problems with it. I'm not sure exactly what's going on there, but it shouldn't be due to the version of GIMP you're using because when I wrote the tutorial, I used an earlier version than the most recent one.

Just a couple of questions so that I can try and narrow down the problem:

Are you dragging randomly across the image? (That's the best way to get a random appearance. No need to drag the same distance or direction.)
Do you have the Blend mode set to Difference? That's very important.

Maybe you can post some screenshots of your results and your GIMP setup if my questions above don't help you resolve the problem.

Also, I know this won't solve your problem and learning how to do it on your own is fun, but if you want to try out this script I wrote to do it in an automated fashion, you can click on this link: [link]

The instructions for installing/using it can be found here in the deviation description: [link]

Let me know if I can be of further help.

I am familiar with the technique from PS and there it worked well, but in Gimp it looks like it is only adding black until the pic is completely black. I have tried various blending modes but no success. I will try to make some screenshots.

Sorry it's giving you fits. Any additional information you can provide will give me more opportunities to help you. Of course, *maybe* there is something wrong with GIMP and you need to reinstall the version you have or install the newest version. But, the version you have should work, that is, if there are no conflicts between it and your system. Hopefully it won't require a reinstall. Have you tried shutting down you comp and restarting? Please don't take my questions as trying to insult your intelligence. I'm not. I'm just trying to gather as much info. together as possible to give you a good answer.

Gimp works well, but sometimes crashes. I tried the method on various days (so it means after restarting the comp), no difference.
Here is the screenshot, but it is in Czech. - after dragging the mouse 2x in various directions. [link]

Actually, your screenshot *looks* like you're on the right track. BUT, I tried something a little different tonight and I think I have another thing for you to try....not sure if this is it or not.....Are you dragging across the whole image every time? The reason I ask that is because when I do that, my image stays mostly dark gray. You need to drag many times (10-20 is a good start) and you don't need to drag across the whole image. Just drag randomly on the image (for example: about 50 pixels from left to right, then next time do 100 pixels from top to bottom, then the next time do it at an angle.) I can't read Czech, but it looks like the only thing that is different on your screenshot from my setup is that my Offset is set to 0 and Posun (which I assume is Offset for you), is set to 25.2. However, that really shouldn't make a difference. I assume that Rozdil is Difference Mode?

Not sure if I'm helping any, but hopefully we can get you set up soon.

I tried all that you advised me but the image becomes black nevertheless, maybe a little slower, when the offset is higher. :(
Rozdíl is Difference indeed.

Sorry again for the delay in responding. Unfortunately, I'm out of ideas. One thing you might try is my script to see if that works. If it doesn't, there's probably a problem with your GIMP version and you either need to uninstall/reinstall or upgrade to a newer version. I wish I had more suggestions more suggestions on this one, but I'm dry. Sorry.
