In this tutorial, I will show you how to do some basic UV Mapping of a cube as shown above using my favorite 3D program, Art of Illusion a.k.a. "AoI" (a free, java-based open source tool) and GIMP for the texture creation. You can download it here: [link]
UV Mapping is basically the process of flattening a 3D object onto a 2D surface. Then, that 2D surface is converted to an image, where it can be imported into an image editor (ie...GIMP) and"painted." The texture is then exported from GIMP, opened back up in AoI, and mapped to the 3D object.
This tutorial will require the use of the Polymesh Editor Plugin (PME). If you're not familiar with downloading/installing scripts/plugins for AoI, check out these video tutorials by marcc ([link]). The process is really straightforward.
I don't cover the rendering aspects, but you can check out some rendering tips in one of my other tutorials here: [link] or downloading the manual here (I highly recommend it!): [link]
While I explain in great detail and use lots of screenshots, you should have a basic understanding of Art of Illusion and GIMP.
However, if you do find someplace where I've not been clear enough or maybe you need a little bit of additional explanation, please don't hesitate to drop me a line. I'll do my best to help you out.
In addition to preparing this in an html format which you download to your computer and read at your leisure, I've also included a pdf file in the download. So, just download the zip file to a convenient location, like your desktop. Double-click the zip file and move the html file AND the "BasicUVMappinginArtofIllusion_files" folder to your desktop (the files folder and html file must be in the same location for the images to show up.) Double-click the html file and the tutorial will open.
Take care and I look forward to seeing your results.
Thanks! Hope it's of use. Glad to hear from you. I've been away for a long time (mostly computer issues), but now those are resolved and I'm back. Just got AOI installed, but I'm finding some buggy stuff. I've confirmed it on 2 computers so I'll be stopping by the forum for assistance. How's things with your artwork? Chat with you soon.

So glad you're back! Artwork is coming along nicely. Check my gallery if you haven't already. What version of AOI has the buggy stuff? I'm still running 2.7.1 and I might upgrade it. Right now, when I'm mapping a texture for a mesh, or even editing it sometimes, I get all these red alerts that are not necessary. Mayid has reported this also.
My latest AOI project is a car (any tips you might have would be appreciated. The car was posted to the Friendly Skies forum). I've always wanted to make a car as well as making a person one day.
