Uh, oh!!! I've gotten the bug again! The GIMP bug, that is!  For some strange reason, I felt the need to start up graphics again and I'm in the process of updating old tutorials/scripts and writing new ones.  Don't know if this is a good thing or not, but it is, what it is! LOL

Cheers!

Art
It's hard to believe that it's been 2.5 years since I've posted anything new or responded to comments. I got out of graphics for awhile due to other interests (mainly my guitar!), but just recently started dabbling in the visual arts again.  I'll probably never devote as much time to artwork as I once did, but I hope to post something in the future.  But, I sure have a LOT of dust & rust to remove before much of anything gets posted.  If you don't use your skills, you will lose them! :)

To those of you who have commented, sent me private messages, and asked for assistance, please forgive me for not responding.  It's certainly never been my personality to not respond and I feel bad for that.  I appreciate all of my followers and the comments/criticisms you've given over the years.

Also, I won't be writing any tutorials, scripts, etc. for a long time, if ever.  I'm going to sit back and learn from all the wonderful artists here on DA and enjoy the ride!

It's nice to be back.

Since my last journal update.  And, once again, I can't respond to the 1900 comments I've received.  Thanks to everyone for your kind words on my artwork.  Things are going very well and with my new computer I plan on doing a lot more.  Best wishes to everyone and happy GIMPing!

I would like to take this opportunity to everyone who has commented or faved my work over the last couple of months.  Your kind words are greatly appreciated.  Unfortunately, my message box is well over a thousand and there's no way I can reply to everyone.  So, that being said, I'm globally thanking everyone today and asking you to forgive me for not responding individually.  For those of you who know me, you know this is a great departure for me, as I ALWAYS respond.  But, I just can't do it.  It started out as a lack of interest in graphics, my monitor conked out, then my grandmother passed away, then back-to-back surgeries for my wife.....Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a pity party, just letting you know it's been a busy few months.  The monitor was recently upgraded and I was so happy and ready to start graphics again...then, the hard drive started to crap out.

But, it looks like I'll be back to some limited activity real soon and looking forward to catching up with old friends and meeting new ones along the way.

Talk to you all soon.  God bless!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'll probably be a little inactive for the next few days (possibly a couple of weeks.)  The computer monitor at home went out and there's no extra cash (or credit) to get a new one.  So, until a new one is purchased, I won't be commenting or posting.

See you when I get back.

EDIT: October 9, 2008 - Well, I think all of the scripts have been uploaded and are functioning in GIMP 2.6 as intended. However, if you have any problems, please let me know and I'll try and correct the matter as soon as possible.

Take care, everyone!

Art

As many of you probably already aware, the newest stable version of GIMP is out (version 2.6)!  Yay, I really like it so far.  At any rate, if you didn't know that you can download it here: www.gimp.org/downloads/

As a result of some of the updates within GIMP, many scripts require modification in order to work correctly.  I've gone through and updated the ones that needed it and am in the process of uploading them to dA.  So, if you run into one that doesn't work, please check my deviations out and see if the updated version has been posted.  If it hasn't, please check back in a few days...I hope to have them all posted by the end of the week.  Not all of them need to be fixed, but most did.  Let me know if you run into any problems with any of the scripts.

Take care.

I've added the last of the documents necessary for the scripting session.  You can download them in this thread:  (www.gimpdome.com/index.php?top… and look for the last 2 items I posted on 8/3/08 (they are a list of the tutorial steps and a script "cheat sheet")  I suggest you download these documents as they will be very handy for the session.

If you have any questions pertaining to the posted information, please ask them in the scripting Q&A thread (there's a link in the post).  I'll wait a couple days to see if the there are any questions and then we'll start scheduling the chat sessions.  Hope to see you there.

Life has started to return to normal and I'm again considering giving a Live Chat Session at gimpdome.com on creating a basic GIMP script.  (Right now, I'm thinking about doing it for this tutorial: fence-post.deviantart.com/art/… a pretty simple tutorial and the script will be a piece of cake (I like cake! :D)  I think it's something that we can cover in about 45-60 minutes, but we'll take as long as we need.

The session will be held in gimpdome.com's chat room, so I'm pretty sure you'll have to be a member to take part, but membership is free.  Although we're always looking for new members, this is not a solicitation.  I just think it would be an easy way to get your feet wet with scripting.

At any rate, if you're interested, post here and let me know.  I won't be able to accommodate everyone's schedule, but I'll do my best.  If there's enough interest, I'm willing to do a couple of sessions.

You can also visit this thread: www.gimpdome.com/forum/index.p… to express your interest.

Take care.

Back in January I wrote a journal saying I would be taking a break for awhile.  Well, I have a history of "quitting what I quit" and my break was short-lived....almost to the point of not even being a break.  In fact, in that journal, I promised that I would post my final scripting tutorials and a tutorial for an Animated Eye in Art of Illusion.  Well, I ended up focusing on getting them done and forgot all about my break.  I posted the tutorials, just not here.  If you would like to read them, you can do so by clicking on the links below (I'll eventually get them posted at dA):

GIMP Scripting 102a (Simple Toolbox Script): www.gimpdome.com/index.php?top…
GIMP Script 102b (Simple Image Window Script): www.gimpdome.com/index.php?top…

GIMP Scripting 103b (Satin Image Script): www.gimpdome.com/index.php?top…
Animated Eye in Art of Illusion 3D: www.gimpdome.com/index.php?top…

I do promise to still offer a live scripting session if there's interest, but again that will be after my REAL break.

*In movie announcer-guy voice* "This time my break is for real." :D  My daughter is in her senior year of high school and rounding the turn towards graduation.  She and I need to spend as much time together as possible.  My dad just retired from work and is spending some quality time with me and my family.  Work has gotten crazy busy (in a good way).  And, my graphic inspiration has hit an all-time low.  Methinks it's time for some honest-to-goodness downtime!

I'm not going away permanently, but I won't be posting here much, if at all.  In fact, I plan on being away until sometime this summer.  Hopefully, I'll feel inspired again and can post something worthy of submitting.

I probably won't be answering questions either because once I start doing that, my break won't last.  Anyone who has spent much time around me online knows I like to be helpful; I'm a sucker to help out anyone.  But this time, I really need a break.

Best wishes to everyone and God bless!

I probably won't be real active on here for the next several weeks as I think it would be a really good time to take a break.  I'll still be GIMPing and such, but I just want to learn some new techniques (especially with regard to scripting and maybe learning some programming....always wanted to learn how to do that) and maybe get back into 3D stuff again.

I've got two tutorials that are in the works: the final one on GIMP scripting and an animated eye in Art of Illusion 3D, but I don't know how long those will take to get posted.  Hopefully soon, but I'm not gonna promise anything.  The scripting one is nearly finished and I'd like to get it up this week sometime, but I've hit a bit of a snag that's holding things up for the moment.

If you send me a note or post a comment, I'll most likely read them, but I may not respond right away.....in fact, it may be several days.  Please don't be offended by my delay; I will get back with you....in due time.

Take care.....life's short, so make sure you tell your family/friends you love them!  See you when I get back!

Many apologies to my friends for not commenting on your artwork lately.  Work has really picked up here at the office (which is a good thing) and I haven't been able to get to all the wonderful pieces of art you guys/gals are showing off.  I view as many as I can and am so inspired by the creativity that's out there.  Thanks so much for keeping me motivated.

I promise to comment/support y'all as much as I can, but know that I'm not trying to avoid any of you....time  is just slipping away ("Slip slidin away, Slip slidin away, You know the nearer your destination, The more you're slip slidin away." Paul Simon)

***********************************************************************

I think I'm trying a bit too hard in my artwork to come up with something new...trying to create something cutting edge.  I've decided today that it's time to enjoy doing what I know how to do and the ideas will come.  It makes no sense to try to 'force' creativity....in fact, I don't even know if it's possible.  Why try?  Don't know, but that's what I've been doing.  After conversing with myself a bit this morning (Yes, I talk to myself! :D I love that scene in Liar Liar where Jim Carrey's kicking his own butt!), I got a new attitude and decided to just let it flow.

***********************************************************************

I hope all of my friends out there are doing fine in your personal lives.  Make sure you keep your family/friends the biggest priority and let them know you care for them.  Time's too short.

Until then, best wishes and God bless!

WOW!  How time flies.  I last posted in my journal in mid-December 2006.  Not for lack of things to say, but lack of time to put things down into pixels.  Lots of changes going on in the world of fencepost.

I've really gone into high gear with 3D.  My favorite program is Art of Illusion.  Wonderful program with a great community.  Here's their main forum link where you can find lots of tutorials, help, and links to other sites including the download site and their Wiki (friendlyskies.net/aoiforum/ind…

GIMP is still playing a central role in my graphic exploration, but has again taken a backseat to something else.  Read my previous paragraph if you need more information. :)

Gimpdome.com, where I help as a moderator, is undergoing some growth spurts right now.  There are also some growing 'pains' involved with the spurt (forum was inaccessible for almost a week), but there's still a LOT happening there.  All good stuff though.  Can't really go into the details at the moment, but keep your eyes on the dome and watch as the site begins to blossom!

Because of the gimpdome happenings, I've decided that it's necessary to change my focus, so that I can be of more help to droz and the other admins/mods.  Probably the biggest change will be my brush conversion project that I've been doing since mid-2005.

A couple of weeks ago, droz (droz928.deviantart.com/) sent me a note and said he was going to quit the brush conversion project so he could focus more on his artwork, gimpdome.com, and most importantly, his family.

I was a bit bummed at first because the inevitable finally happened....not only for droz, but for myself as well.  Why was I bummed?  Yeah, I know they're just digital brushes.  But the process has become a real extension of me and has allowed me to 'meet' some wonderful people on the web with a common interest.  So, in that sense, I'm bummed.  I feel like I'm letting go of a good friend.  But, like droz, the time has come for me to 'pass the torch' to someone else.  I may do a set here or there....just to keep my digital skills sharp, but no new conversions/uploads are planned anytime soon.

If you'd like to do your own conversions, you can find some valuable information at our Project-GimpBC site.

The one thing that won't change is my tutorial writing.  I've got a bunch of stuff that's been in the works for a long time, and I really promise to get those posted soon.  The list includes (not in any particular order):

Denim Part II - Creating seams, stitching, etc.
Using Paths in GIMP GAP Animations - Here's some links to some WIP's using the techniques:  img.photobucket.com/albums/v29… & img255.imageshack.us/img255/93…
I also plan on doing some more Art of Illusion tutorials as I learn about that program.
There are some others on the docket, but none earth shattering.

If you'd like to see a Photoshop tutorial converted to GIMP, feel free to send me a note with your request.  If time permits, I'll certainly give it consideration.

Well, that's about all for now.  Time to go attend to some other duties....*snicker....I said duties!.....snicker*

Until next time, keep on bending pixels!

Take care and God Bless!

I need to beg for forgiveness.  I've been so busy with life the last several weeks that I've not gotten around to replying to anyone's comments.  It's not that I don't care, I just can't get to them.  So, if it's ok with everyone, I'm just gonna give a big global thanks to everyone for your kind words and constructive criticisms.  They all mean a lot to me.  I promise to be better about responding once the new year starts up again.

Thanks for your understanding.

Art
Well, my wife and I and a couple of friends are taking a cruise for the next couple of days to visit the Eastern Caribbean!  Can't wait!  I'll see everyone when I return and hopefully have a lot of pictures to share and a renewed excitement & inspiration for my graphics.

Take care and see you in a few days!

Art
Well, I'm sure there's no lifelong significance to having 5,000 pageviews, but it's pretty neat nonetheless!  Why 5,000?  Why not 3,672 or 4,531?  I don't really know.  It's funny how we assign value to certain numbers or objects without any reasoning behind it.

But, regardless of the number of pageviews I've received, whether it's 500 or 500,000, I want to let everyone know that stops by and takes time out of his or her busy schedule to view my little corner of the world, I greatly appreciate you.  You make creating GIMP tutorials very worthwhile.

The only complaint that I have is that many of you never show me your results.  I may not be able to comment in detail on every work you link me to, but I'll certainly try to review each one and let you know I've looked at your efforts.  It's cool to see the processes being used!

So, a big "Thanks" to all you "fencepost" watchers out there!  It's much appreciated!

God bless you all.

Upcoming Tutorials

Here are some tutorials that are in the works. Although I've numbered them, they won't be coming in any particular order.

1) Using video files in GIMP: Converting mov (Quicktime), mpeg, mpg, and avi to use in your GIMP projects.

Here's the tutorial: Adding Video to GIMP Projects

2) Denim 2: Building off the first tutorial to create realistic-looking material.
3) Building a GAP animation backwards: An accidental discovery that may allow some "reluctant" GAP users to enjoy it features more fully. As the title says, we will approach it in a backwards or atypical fashion.
4) Using paths in animations. Discovered some new techniques while working on my Handwritten Text tutorial.

There are more, but I can't remember them at the moment. So, keep your eyeballs pealed!
Well, as I said in my previous journal I was on an emotional roller coaster ride and shutting down my submissions for awhile.  The whining's over and I'm ready to start the shop up again.  Thanks everyone for the encouraging words and please forgive for not responding.  They really mean a lot to me and I don't want anyone to think I'm being a jerk for not responding.  I always like to respond to everything that's sent to me, but sometimes there's just not enough hours in the day.

Thanks for your sentiments.

Upcoming Tutorials

Inspiration

Well, after leaving gimptalk, I was inspired to transfer of all the tutorials to DA (a task which is nearly complete!)  I've got 1 more to go and haven't decided if it's really needed here or not.  I probably won't post it, but you never know.  It was a bit of a chore to get everything moved, but really didn't take as long to accomplish as I thought.  And I'm very pleased with the way things turned out as a result of converting them to html and pdf format.  I've gotten some positive feedback from that, which is always good.

Perspiration

As a result of the inspiration, I quickly began the perspiration phase by completing 3 or 4 new tutorials and started on several more.  I'm working on some tutorials on animation, texture stuff, more brushes being converted, and on and on and on!  If there were only more time in the day and I didn't have to work at a real job!  Ahh, such is life.  Work always gets in the way of pleasure. :D

Deflation

But, as quickly as things come, they sometimes go, and this is true of my feelings at the moment.  What a roller coaster ride I'm on.....

This evening I decided to close down the GIMP tutorial and brush shop for awhile and take a much needed vacation.  The feedback here at DA has been nothing but fabulous, but I've noticed some trends elsewhere that I'm not too keen on.  I won't be going into the details here as it may sound like whining to those of you who aren't familiar with the situations, but let's just say I'm annoyed.

When will I be back? Don't really know.  As I said above, as quickly as things come, they sometimes go....maybe tomorrow I'll reconsider and all will be fine.  But, I don't think so.  I need to some play time and there's no better time than the present.

Here's wishing everyone good times ahead and I'll see you again sometime, hopefully soon.  I'll still be posting occasional artwork here and checking in on things, so I'm not entirely out, but.....

Cheers everyone and God bless!

Art
Well, a couple of weeks ago, due to time constraints and other factors, I decided to step down as administrator of gimptalk.com.  It was a hard decision as I really had a lot of fun and learned immensely from so many people.

The neat thing about no longer being part of the site, is that I have time to do the things I want to, without the hassle.  One of my favorite things to do is help others in the "ways of GIMP."  I like sharing what I've learned, and even though I'm no longer a part of gimptalk, that doesn't lessen my desire to teach at all.  In fact, now that I have more "free" time, I want to be as active as ever!

You may have already noticed that I've posted several tutorials here in the last few days.  I believe that two of them are brand new, but most of them are a bit older, but every bit as relevant.  To some of you, you've seen these before and may wonder why there being posted here.  After all, it's old news, right?!  Well, maybe and maybe not.

Some folks don't go web surfing that much and may have never seen them before.  I was always amazed when viewing the posts at gimptalk how people would say they had never heard of the site before.  I'd scratch my head and think, "What?!  You've never heard of gimptalk?!  Everybody's heard of gimptalk!"  Well, gimptalk is not in the center of everyone's universe.  So, I figured I'd expand my horizons and get my stuff out to the masses in another forum.

So, if you happen to see a bunch of "redundant information" popping up, just remember, it might not be redundant to everyone!

Cheers to everyone!  Continue to stop by here and visit me at DA.  I'm also spending considerable time over at Gimp Battle Dome (www.gimpbattledome.com) competing against some of GIMP's finest!  So, if you don't catch me here, chances are, you'll catch me there.

God bless.
